First-run showing of SILK,
directed by Francois Girard

Opens Saturday, January 19
@@Nichigeki 3 and othersGlater at theatres nationwide

This Canada-Japan-Italy co-production is the latest work from Director Francois Girard iThe Red Violinj. It is a screen rendition of Seta igsilkhj, the novel by Alessandro Baricco iThe Pianist on the Oceanj. In the mid-nineteenth century, a young Frenchman named Herve travels to faraway Japan where his task is to buy silkworm eggs. Well aware that his new bride is waiting for him back home, he nevertheless finds himself drawn like a silk thread to the fresh and mysterious beauty of a charming Oriental girl. Vivid photography and a lush score by Ryuichi Sakamoto further enhance this elegantly woven tale of East meets West. Stars include Michael Pitt, Keira Knightley, Koji Yakusho, Sei Ashina, and Miki Nakatani.

Shinobu AkimotoF
Better Living and Other Projects

Friday, January 18 - Thursday, March 20
@@Embassy of Canada Prince Takamado Gallery

Artist Shinobu Akimoto has been based in Canada since the early 1990s. Through witty conceptual works she has been asking a question: Is making art just one of the experiences of living? Or is it something that special people do? In this first solo exhibition in Japan, Akimoto sums up everything she has done so far. The centrepiece is the installation Better Living from 2004-2005. It consists mainly of pictures of a bird, a cat, and a bunny photographed while gshoppinghin a miniature home and garden centre, china shop, and furniture store. The conceptual approach reflected in Akimoto's work is characteristic of contemporary Canadian art and is the driving force behind the Canadian art scene.
