Her worldwide hit Calling You in 1991 cemented her reputation as one of the top voices in jazz and the following year saw her win Gold Discs for top international newcomer in Japan as well as top jazz album. g100th Anniversary of the Publication of Anne of Green Gables -- Anne's Worldh
Embassy of Canada Oscar Peterson Theatre, Tokyo
Anne of Green Gables, the richly imaginative novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery, unfolds in the beautiful natural setting of Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada. Still widely read today, it was first published in June, 1908 - 100 years ago this year. Hanako Muraoka introduced the story to Japan with her famous translation, published in 1952, of the English original received as a gift in 1939 from Canadian missionary Loretta L. Shaw.

The anniversary is being marked, in Japan as well as in Canada, with a spectacular array of events and projects. They include Shincho Bunko's publication of a new and partially revised version of Muraoka's translation with a readers' essay contest, Anne exhibits at department stores, performances of the Anne musical, a new DVD release of the 3-part movie series, and sale of a specially boxed set of Anne television animations on DVD. NHK educational TV will also offer a three-month English course entitled gAnne's journey-fun in Anne's world using the original text.h Last but not least, Budge Wilson's Before Green Gables will be published in Japanese in June. It tells the story of Anne before she came to Green Gables.

On Friday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m., a talk and reading entitled g100th Anniversary of the Publication of Anne of Green Gables -- Anne's Worldh will be presented as part of the Canadian Embassy's E.H. Norman Library Speaker Series. We are offering 25 pairs of tickets (50 tickets in all) to readers of this newsletter. Please note that the event will be conducted in Japanese. Please apply here.
